“Education in music is most sovereign because more than anything else rhythm and harmony find their way to the innermost soul and take strongest hold upon it”.
Plato
Music is the most honest expression of humankind. Teaching is a job, a profession, but it is above all an art that involves talent, skill, and creativity. In my opinion, the music educator is a teacher engaged in the intellectual adventure of understanding, and he looks at the education as an inner journey. The music educator is a specialist in knowing and transmitting. That of teaching is a continuous search backed by the desire to go beyond what has been achieved. Thus the arrival point of the teacher path corresponds and coincides with the point of a new departure. This way the growth path is continuous. In the light of this aspect of teaching, I look at the students also as an opportunity for growth, a stimulus to continue exploring new horizons, new spaces and knowledge of their “social's time”.
That of teaching is a humanistic profession, and compassion is the utmost sensation of understanding, showing others to care about them. A compassionate teacher expresses this characteristic to students through their actions and as a result, students will be more likely to understand the world around them. Empathy is a very important feature to possess and to try to develop in us and towards our students. Students learn better if they feel a connection developing with their teacher, for this reason empathy is another key trait for a music educator. Being able to put ourselves in the shoes of someone else and see things from his point of view can have a very strong impact on our decisions and actions helping us to act in the best way possible. It’s important to show students that we, as teacher, have an enthusiasm for all musical styles so that they are motivated to do some exploration for themselves and find out what they like. This can also help them open their eyes to some types of music they may never have considered before.
Particularly important is being a positive person and smile! This is not an easy task. Being a positive teacher is even more difficult above all when we come across problems with very limited solutions. However, staying positive when the situation is very tough can have a very positive impact on both students and those around us. Looking at the positive side seems to always make a contribution to improving things.
Patience is another key aspect for a music educator. Teaching is a process in which the teacher help his students to understood musical concepts and this process could ask to the teacher to be more patient because different students will have different learning styles and times.
Finally, a great teacher should be able to discover hidden treasures, chances and magic of his students!
